When you go to the grocery store and purchase groceries, do you check out the nutrition facts label? If you don't you should, because these labels offer up a slew of information regarding the food you are consuming. Pretty much anything you buy in a grocery store, from a pack of gum to a six pack of soda will have nutrition information labeled somewhere on the package. Your job is to figure out what the numbers mean and how they translate into a balanced diet for you. It may be confusing at first, but with practice you'll be able to read food labels like a pro. There are a few important things to look at when viewing a nutrition facts label, the first being the serving size. If you don't know the serving size, all of the other numbers are meaningless because the serving size corresponds to the number of calories and other nutrients you're getting. Calories is another important number to look at on the label, but keep in mind the servings you eat will dictate how many calories you are actually consuming. Also, check out the total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium levels in the food you buy. You want to limit your intake of these as much as possible. Consequently, make sure you're getting enough Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium and Iron from the food you're eating. These are also listed on the nutrition facts label. When shopping for groceries, check out food labels carefully. Provided you note the serving size and how it corresponds to the rest of the nutrients, you should be able to make healthier choices when it comes to choosing food for you and your family. |
